Figurative realist

At the heart of Jo’s work is an attempt to capture a sense of strength and hope within a world of uncertainty and shadows. She is drawn to the melancholic while also being inspired by individual resilience and determination.

She started drawing after discovering the concept art and world building which sit behind movies like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and has drawn much inspiration from a life-long love of reading influenced by her own experiences amplified by the dystopian landscapes found in Young Adult literature discovered on her children’s bookshelves.

Primarily self-taught - her art style is built on approaches and ideas followed by American Artists. Pivotal to this has been a two-year period working under the mentorship of Steve Huston - a constructive realist who worked extensively in film animation and illustration before switching to fine art and art education.

Artistic influences are varied and include the Renaissance masters, Nicolai Fechin, Edward Hopper and inking masters such as Joseph Clement Coll. More modern influences can be found in the work of Jeremy Lipking and Joseph Todorovich.
